OTOL Louisiana-Texas RailFest 2018: Houston Fares

Sunday & Monday, July 15-16, 2018

Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro) of Harris County is Houston's transit agency. They run many local and express bus routes throughout the area, as well as three light rail lines collectively known as Metrorail. The base fare on local buses and Metrorail is $1.25 . It can be paid in cash (exact fare) or through two types of smart cards.

The regular reloadable fare card is called the Metro Q Fare Card, and it works on a stored value basis whereby the cost of each trip is deducted as you tap the card before and after each ride. A Day Pass version of this fare card is also available for $3.00 which maximizes each day's travel at that amount. Thus for 3 or more trip segments this is the most worthwhile fare instrument.

The Day Pass works just like the Metro Q Fare Card, where you will load $3 on it, and still need to tap the card boarding and leaving each trip segment. $1.25 will be deducted from its value for each of the first 2 trips, and then 50 cents will be deducted for the third trip, with any subsequent trips free. The Day Pass will NOT activate until the third trip. It is valid only on the date of activation, until 2:00 AM the following morning.

Children ages 5 and under travel for free. Medicare card holders and Seniors 65-69 get a 50% discount. Those 70 and over travel for free. To get these discounts, you can print out and mail this application to Metro.

There is an smartphone app available on which you can load a variety of the above tickets. Information on how to download the app and the tickets that you can load onto it is here. Note that the senior discounted fares discussed above are not available on the app, so full fare will be charged if it is used.

Our "official" Fest rides will be taken on Sunday, with Monday a free day on your own. Should you choose to use Metro to travel around on Monday, you will need to purchase more fares. The Day Pass could be loaded with $6.00, and then a minimum of three more trips on Monday would be required to activate the Day Pass feature.
