OTOL Mid Atlantic RailFest 2006 was yet another multi-city meeting of railfans in two of the most railfan-friendly cities in the United States.
First, we visited Baltimore. We rode the heavy rail Metro subway, as well as the light rail system. New to most of us was the results of the double tracking project, which was completed in early 2006. This allows for more frequent service on the northern and southern sections of the system.
Besides MTA Maryland's rapid transit, we also rode two MARC routes. We took the Penn Line (which runs entirely on Amtrak trackage) to its northern end at Perryville, and its southern end at Washington, DC's Union Station. Then we returned to Baltimore on MARC's Camden Line, which follows a parallel CSX-owned route and serves the Camden Yards section of Baltimore.
Then we headed up to Philadelphia. During our limited time there, we rode three Regional Rail lines, two of which run on weekdays only. Also, we rode the restored 15 trolley along Girard Avenue.
This was a three-day fest, our first one that involved only weekdays.
