The intention of OTOL Rockies RailFest 2014 was to experience the many rail transit options in two great cities, namely Salt Lake City and Denver. We crossed the Rocky Mountains on the California Zephyr in both directions.
Both cities have expansive light rail systems. Salt Lake City has commuter rail as well. (Denver is also building a few commuter rail lines but they won't be ready at this time.) Salt Lake City has the S Line streetcar, and Denver has a heritage trolley line that we also got to ride.
Our Amtrak travels took us as far west as Reno, NV where we turned around. This gave us two more overnight trips on the California Zephyr. It was supposed to help us avoid the poor calling times in both Salt Lake City and Denver, however due to lateness of our two westbound trains, that did not happen as intended.
